The truth is, there are so many good choices for you out there. The market is over-saturated right now, you can burn a whole in your pocket trying to find the perfect balance of features for yourself. Here I show you five top tips to helping you make that all important decision.

A mouse choice can be very preferential, but like all things, there is some key things to consider. Because I’m a gamer just like you, I’ve been through the struggles trying to find the perfect combination of features, price and performance. So, below are my five top tips for choosing your weapon of choice…

#1: Know your target gaming genre

In fact, there are many game genres out there. From real-time strategy games, first person shooting, racing games to action RPG and more. If you want to shop for a new gaming mouse, keep in-mind your favourite gaming genre.

Because many mice are created differently for many types of games, they vastly vary in appearance, ergonomics and functions to cater for their target genres.

If you love playing FPS games, you need a mouse with high resolution sensor (1800dpi). While this might not be the DPI setting you will use, the higher resolution capabilities allow for quicker, but more accurate movements. RTS & MMO gamers will look for multiple buttons for use with macros and keybinds. So think carefully about your target gaming genre when choosing a mouse.

#2: What is your gaming mouse budget?

Budget is a real problem. Especially for players who have to earn their own money, with many other commitments, and limited funds to pump into your hobby. I know this because I’m in the same boat here.

Prices of gaming mice range hugely. From as little as £10 to hundreds of pounds. Therefore, it depends on your budget, as to which mice to be aiming for. Bear in mind however, that a £100 mouse is not necessarily better than say a £20 one. It would mean possibly build quality differences, or lacking features, but can even come down to pure branding of the mice.

That said, certain brands are consistently outperforming others, and as such a higher price you will pay.

#3: Choose your gaming grip style

There are many different mouse grip styles for gamers. That’s why they will love some particular mouses and hate the others. This is often a contention among gamers over their particular gaming grip style, but mainly comes down to preference, but again mice cater differently towards these.

Fact is, numerous gamers commit the same mistake that they only pay attention to the price. What they forget to check is how that mouse will fit into their hands. If you spend hundreds of pounds to buy an over-performing, disco-ball RGB monolith of a mouse, just to find out that it doesn’t fit your hand, you’ve wasted your money, and being feeling a little empty inside.

Whenever possible, go to a store that has these mice to touch and feel, once it feels right to you, then you can either purchase from the store direct, or look for better deals online.

#4: Inspect the extra features of the mouse

Are you after a no-thrills basic functioning mouse? Or do you require an all singing and dancing mouse that could order takeaways for you while your gaming?

I believe that gaming mice nowadays offer many valuable functions and bonuses for gamers. Things like on-the-fly DPI/Sensitivity settings, predefined macros along with a full editing suite, customise-able grips, buttons and more.

If you can have more benefits from the same amount of investment, you will take the deal, right? Just glance at the descriptions and some customer reviews, you will have the big picture.

#5: With or without wires?

If you’re like me, a typical gamer, your desk will be messy all the time. More than often, it’s a real pain. That’s why they invented wireless peripherals. But can wireless gear offer the same quality or accuracy and feedback like wired ones? This is a debatable question. My experience shows me that they can. But you’re the decision maker here.

Admittedly in lab testing environments, wired will be more precise and responsive than wireless, but in the real-world, can we really notice this difference. As stated, I’ll let you be the judge of this one.

If you like a clean desk, choose wireless ones. If you believe that wired gears offer better quality and don’t mind doing some house keeping, go with them. It’s your choice.

So there it is, my top 5 tips to choosing your perfect gaming mouse! I hope you find these tips useful, if you did, then please leave a rating and/or comment below.
